ODL PARTICIPATION NEARLY DOUBLED! SSIS-BATANGAS SHOWS GRIT AMIDST CRISIS

From 44% of participation from last week, Online Distance Learning (ODL) leapt to an average of 79% this week, showing that Valiant Knights, mentors, parents, and guardians are steadfastly working hard and having unwavering commitment to delivering quality education in all circumstances. Like so many who've found themselves on the frontlines, teachers are being impacted by the pandemic — and the community's associated anxieties — in all kinds of unprecedented ways. That being said, they have still continuously and diligently held classes online, assigned workload, and given feedback to the students. Equally commendable are our Valiant Knights who also adjusted very well to the current situation and did not only keep up with their responsibilities, but also found it in their hearts to enjoy this new learning experience. And of course, a huge part of the reason they were able to do so is that they were guided by their parents and/or guardians who, despite their busy schedules, still did their part to make the circumstances work, AND WORK, IT DID! Grit, cooperation, and passion for learning had brought us here, and we can only hope that we could continue this increasing trend in engagement in everybody’s part in the weeks to come. Dear VALIANT KNIGHTS COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS,

Stonyhurst Southville International School Batangas City Campus (SSIS-B) has always committed itself to the highest ideals of delivering quality international education throughout its 24 years of existence. With its globally-benchmarked curriculum, practices, and innovations, SSIS-B has earned a reputation in Batangas and the Philippines as a premier learning institution that produces Graduates Equipped with the 5Cs who will become Movers of Society (G.E.M.S.).

It is with these ideals in mind that the Management, Faculty, and Staff had vowed to remain steadfast in our commitment to facilitate continuous learning among our students even during this time of the COVID-19 crisis.

We congratulate all our students for having successfully participated in online classes last week. Great job Valiant Knights! You did a great job in managing your learning responsibilities in the different subjects throughout the week. Keep it up!

Likewise, we would like to congratulate and thank the AMAZING PARENTS OF THE VALIANT KNIGHTS for taking on the very challenging (not to mention stressful) task of supervising and monitoring your children's online class activities and responsibilities. You all deserve a commendation for having been able to juggle this task with all your other responsibilities in the family and at work. Stay amazing!

Lastly, let us give a round of applause to the equally amazing teachers and subject area heads who, despite having their own fear about the COVID-19 crisis, had never wavered in their commitment to learning and had shown dedication in facilitating and monitoring the online activities this week. To all the mentors of the Valiant Knights, I salute you and commend you for a productive first week of online distance learning! Keep up the good work!

As we continue on to the second week of the enhanced community quarantine, we had put in place some revisions on the protocols governing the implementation and practice of Online Distance Learning. These had been summarized by the series of infographics below. (DETAILS SHALL BE CONTAINED IN THE BULLETIN THAT WILL BE SENT TO YOU TOMORROW).

These refinements which will take effect beginning Monday, March 23, 2020, are being undertaken to address the feedback that we received from parents, students, and yes, even teachers. The objective of these refinements is to facilitate online distance learning that is "light and easy" and not take too much time of parents from performing all their other responsibilities. In addition, these refinements allow for more manageable and flexible schedule of online classes and submission of outputs. Hopefully, these will allow students (and their parents) to continue learning and become productive and at the same time enjoy being with the rest of the family at home.

We hope that you will be one with us in this endeavor. Together, let us make this work and achieve its intended purpose. Together, as ONE VALIANT KNIGHTS FAMILY OF LEARNERS, let us make it through this COVID-19 crisis with more love and understanding towards each other. Stay safe and healthy Valiant Knights.

The SSIS-Batangas City Campus Response to the COVID-19 Health Emergency

Dear Valiant Knights,

Stonyhurst Southville International School (SSIS) – Batangas City Campus is actively working with academic and health experts to implement a range of measures to ensure the health and safety of the SSIS-Batangas community of learners, parents, and faculty, and staff. With the declaration of a state of public health emergency, SSIS recognizes the urgency of the situation and has been taking the following PREVENTIVE HEALTH MEASURES to address the situation:
1. Mandatory Health Screening of all students, faculty and staff, parents, guardians, guests who enter the school premises. The screening includes temperature check, spraying of alcohol / disinfectant on hands, and wearing of face masks. All individuals who will be found with a temperature of 37.5 and above WILL BE ASKED TO REST AND RECUPERATE IN THE SAFETY OF THEIR HOMES. 2. All students, parents, guardians, and school personnel, especially those who have cough and colds, are ADVISED to WEAR A FACE MASK while inside the school premises. Please bring your own face masks. There may not be enough supply available in school. 3. All students, parents, guardians, and school personnel who will develop a temperature of 37.5 & above will be confined in the School Clinic and will be immediately sent home. After receiving a call from the School Nurse, parents are expected to fetch their sick child in school and bring them home or to a doctor for a check-up. 4. Students and parents who had a travel history in the past 7-14 days from countries where there have been CONFIRMED CASES of the COVID-19 are advised to do a voluntary self-quarantine for at least 14 days (from the date of re-entry in the Philippines) in their own homes. Parents are advised to be HONEST in coordinating with the school authorities regarding travel history and re-entry into the Philippines vis-à-vis academic workload that students may undertake while at home. 5. All external visitors (including AlumKnights) will be asked to fill-out the HEALTH STATUS DISCLOSURE FORM before they are allowed entry into the campus. Depending on the details that they will place in their disclosure form, visitors may also be required to wear a face mask throughout their stay in the campus. Visitors who have a travel history in the last 7-14 days to countries, to Metro Manila, or any local place where cases of the COVID-19 had been confirmed, MAY BE DENIED ENTRY into the campus.

7. The school undertakes a general cleaning and more thorough disinfection of the school premises and facilities every weekend when students are not in school. The school shall adopt disinfecting measures and guidelines set by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) USA. 8. An hourly “Self-Care Habit” shall be practiced where everyone (including teachers and staff) will simultaneously drink water to stay hydrated and to keep their throats moist and disinfect their hands by the spraying of alcohol. This will be signaled by the ringing of the bell and a reminder over the PA system. All students and staff are then expected to regularly bring a water-bottle and pocket-sized 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. 9. Daily reminder of Preventive Measures is given during the Homeroom Class to avoid getting any kind of flu virus. Reminders include tips from the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) on maintaining proper hygiene through constant hand washing, proper use of masks, and coughing and sneezing etiquette. 10. Monthly fogging of the school buildings and premises to get rid of disease-causing insects and pests. 11. Participation in the monthly SGEN 5-Star Campus Audit to maintain a healthy, safe, and conducive learning environment. 12. All parents are discouraged from travelling outside of the country or in places within the Philippines where cases of the COVID-19 had been confirmed. If travelling abroad is a MUST, students and parents are advised to do a voluntary self-quarantine for at least 14 days upon reentry into the Philippines and refrain from coming to the school. 13. All parents are discouraged from visiting crowded places and / or attending events that will have large crowds. If this cannot be avoided, please do wear protective masks properly. 14. Parents whose children show symptoms of the flu (fever, cough, colds, headache, etc.) are ADVISED to have their children be checked by a doctor and have them stay at home until full recovery. Please inform your child’s Homeroom Adviser of these health-related information so that they can facilitate assistance with academic work that will be missed. 15. Entry and access to the school premises for PARENTS shall be limited to the drop-off area. The lobby, the buildings, corridors, etc. beyond the lobby will be declared OFF-LIMITS. Parents who have appointments will have to go through routine health screening and will have to fill-out the HEALTH STATUS DISCLOSURE FORM before being allowed entry into the buildings. The PR & Marketing Office shall be the holding area while waiting for confirmed appointments. Parents are advised to wear a face mask while in the school premises. 16. Similarly, #15 measure is applicable to Caregivers (Yayas and Drivers). Caregivers are advised to stay in their vehicles and designated waiting areas where they will take meals and wait for dismissal. Caregivers are also advised to bring their own packed meals and eating utensils as access to the cafeteria shall not be allowed. Caregivers may only use the comfort room at the Drop-Off Area. 17. There will be a moratorium on the attendance and / or participation of students and teachers and staff to activities, external competitions, seminars, conventions, etc. beginning on March 16, 2020 to minimize their exposure to the COVID-19. 18. School activities that are usually held outside of the school campus like the remaining Comprehensive Growth Series (CGS) of Grades 11 & 12, and the Extended Learning Activities of the Senior High School students shall be re-designed to fit an in-house activity to be held within the school premises. 19. Depending on the status of the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency in the Philippines in May and June, the school MAY consider the canceling of end-of-year culminating activities such as the Recognition Day, Graduation Day, etc. in compliance to the Executive Order #9, s. 2020 issued on March 9, 2020 by the City Mayor. 20. As children are reporting to school regularly, ALL PARENTS (and Caregivers) are expected to consistently observe pertinent preventive health measures at home and at work and to remain vigilant so as to protect your families and our children from contracting the COVID-19.

Tenth graders Darmarie Anne Joelle S. Guamos and Kyron Simone A. Cueto showed that the Filipino Youth really are a driving force in nation-building for being declared Champion in Essay Writing and 1st Runner Up in Dagliang Talumpati, respectively, in the recently concluded Karibok ang Tuktok, held last November 16 at De La Salle – Lipa. Congratulations as well to the other participants: Juliana Irish C. Portugal, Darlito Jabin S. Guamos, and Nhaya D. Amurao who held their own in the Quiz Bee against the 21 schools of the Batangas Province; Chiara Alexie Angela C. Ylagan for Pagsulat ng Sanaysay; Princess Paula Margareth B. NAVARRO GETS INDUCTED INTO THE INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY

Young Valiant Knight Paul Vincent Leandrei L. Navarro gets inducted into the INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY. Congratulations Leandrei for being one of only 700 students worldwide to be inducted into this prestigious honor society.

The International Junior Honor Society (IJHS) is Asia’s premier league established to recognize outstanding primary to junior college students who have won Gold awards in Mathematics, Science, Computational Thinking, Informatics, Memory and Creative Learning Skills.

Students are exclusively invited by the International Scholastic Trust (IST) to join this society to pursue excellence and we provide a suite of services to help them succeed. Once inducted, IJHS supported by IST and SIMCC will enhance their abilities in leadership, creativity, and character building through our Young Achievers Leadership Academy (YALA) and community service activities.

Students must have received at least 2 Gold medals within previous year in our competitions (SASMO, VANDA, AJMC, SIMOC, IJMO etc.) to receive an invite. Students who have received 1 Gold medal and at least a Silver medal in an International Competition (IJMO or SIMOC) will also be inducted into IJHS.

5Cs Curriculum Appreciation Day

You are all invited to an interactive learning session about the 5Cs Curriculum. Please take note of the schedule: · Thursday, September 19, will be for Parents of 1st to 12th Grade Students. This will be held at the SSIS Batangas Main Hall from 9:00 AM to 12:00 NN. · Friday, September 20, will be for Parents of Pre-School Students. This will be held at the SSIS Batangas Main Hall from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The 5Cs – Competence, Character, Commitment, Collaboration, and Creativity – are principles on which the school bases its activities that are deemed needed to translate educational goals into concrete observable change in students. Valiant Knights dominate Cluster 1 Filipino BCPRISA

High School students have bagged laurels from the Filipino BCPRISA Cluster Meet held last August 31. Congratulations to following students and coaches for once again raising the Valiant Knight flag of excellence: Angela Andrei Macalalad was the Champion in the SHS Dagliang Pagtatalumpati Category. Morever, Nicole Bantigue, Jacyrae Dela Pena, Danielle Atienza, and Lourence Butihin were also Champions in the JHS Interpretatibong Pagbasa Category. The students were coached by Dr. Emily Ylagan (Dagliang Pagtatalumpati) and Ms. Edlyn Asi (Interpretatibong Pagbasa). They will be representing Cluster 1 in the Division/City Meet.
NAVARRO SNATCHES WORLD MATH OLYMPIAD BRONZE

Third-grader, Paul Vincent Leandrei L. Navarro outwitted student math wizards from over 10 countries and grabbed the Bronze Award in the recently concluded 14th World Cup of the World Math-Fusion Olympiad held at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, last August 10-12.

The competition, hosted by the WMO Organizing Committee was attended by nearly 200 students from China, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The goals of the WMO competition are to promote international exchange among mathematically gifted students, to establish a math-based innovative education paradigm, and to cultivate future convergent leaders with the ability to view learning and the world from novel perspectives by stimulating their curiosity and spirit of inquiry. The World Math-Fusion Olympiad (WMO) is a global Math competition attended by multinational elementary and middle school students who enjoy Math. Closely related to real-life experiences and connected with science, technology, engineering and art, WMO breaks the traditional format of math competitions by challenging contestants to apply creative and integrated methods to solve problems that focus on border-crossing thinking through interesting and entertaining activities in a festive atmosphere. Cabral bags two Swimjunkie Challenge Feats

Francis Ethan Cabral, proved once again his unmatchable might in the waters as he scooped two awards in the Swimjunkie Challenge. The tenth grader swimmer snatched First Place in the 5 km Overall Men’s Category and Fifth Place in the Global Swim Series – Age 19 and Under Bracket. Swimjunkie Challenge covers four beaches and three coral fields, specifically at Gota Beach, Hunongan Cove, Lahos Island, and Matukad Island. It started in 2015 to show the Philippines’ world class open water swim courses and gather swimmers around the globe.
Valiant Knights, Champions of Literacy

The Valiant Knights’ love for reading has once again paved way to numerous awards in this year’s Scholastic Readers’ Cup. First off, the school won the First Place - Synergy Award together with SSIS Malarayat. This is the second year that the SSIS Schools had received this award. This award is for the Emerald Category or schools that have a population of 300-499 students. SSIS had garnered the highest average number of books read last academic year with 132 books per student. The school also received a Third Place finish in the Emerald Category after SSIS Batangas garnered the third highest average of books read for schools nationwide with a population of 300-499, with an average of 135 books per student last academic year. Lastly, the school also received a Special Award as 100% of the students from Grades 1-10 was able to read the Scholastic target of 40 books in one academic year. Congratulations to all the Valiant Knights from Grades 1-10 of AY 2018-2019 and the Library Teachers, Debbie Almarez, Sharmaine Kristine Ginete, Geneca Barola, Angel Gabriel Cuaresma, Christelle Aya, Alaiza Joice Guinihin, Rosa Jealyn Manalo, and Cheyenne Rose Buitizon along with Dr. Raquel Plata, Scholastic Literacy Program Coordinator and Ms. Joy Ramirez, last year’s School Librarian!
Valiant Knights, Home again for AY 2019-2020

It is indeed a happy new year as the collaborative efforts of the SC officers and level representatives welcomed the SSIS community for academic year 2019-2020. The students from Grade School until Senior High School got a warm welcome last August 6, while ECED students were received with open arms last August 7. The students were welcomed with personalized medals which served as motivation for them to aim even higher this academic year. On the other hand, teachers and staff members received a simple breakfast of coffee and pandesal to give them energy and cheer them on. The inclement weather could not bring down the school’s high spirits as VK Got Talent winners from the Grade School Department, namely: Yaj Reyes, Nicole Ubamos and siblings, and Marley Deza performed together with Jayden Buenavente, Ralph Cuenca, Mika Gonda, and Sam Torres. The morning greeting was immediately followed by Sir AC’s opening message during the assembly and Sir Jhun’s Discipline Orientation and Good Manners Program Orientation to the Students.

When was SSIS founded?

SSIS was founded in 1996 in Gulod Itaas, Batangas City. After 10 years, it extended its wings and built a new campus in Lipa City, which is now the SSIS - Malarayat Campus.

Who heads Stonyhurst

The founder and Chairman of the Board is Sir Peter P. Laurel while the Executive Mentor is Dr. Genevieve Ledesma-Tan. Top management includes Mr. Lawrence Buck (Director for SGEN), Dr. Marl V. Ferenal (President), and Dr. Beng Yague (Vice-President). The principal of SSIS-Malarayat is Ms. Donnabelle L. Atienza and the principal of SSIS-Batangas is Mr. Anthony Calado.

What is SGEN?

SSIS is a proud member of Southville Global Education Network (SGEN), which is composed of 7 schools namely Southville International School and Colleges (SISC), Southville Foreign University (SFU), Stonyhurst Southville International School – Malarayat Campus (SSIS-M), Stonyhurst Southville International School – Batangas Campus (SSIS-B), South Mansfield College (SMC), Social Environment and Educational Development Foundation Academy (SEEDFA), and South Seed LPDH College.

What makes SSIS truly International?

SSIS is international through Republic Act 9493 signed by former Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Its accrediting bodies include the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC, USA) and Certification International (CI). The SSIS Curriculum is based on International Standards.

What is Quant Je Puis?

The motto of SSIS is Quant Je Puis. This is a French term that means “As Best as I can.”
